Manus Alternatives After Its $500M Raise: Which Agent Can You Actually Use This Week?

Manus alternatives after its $500M raise: Claude, Perplexity Max, Hermes Agent and Genspark compared on price and availability as of 15 October 2026.

By Madhur Jain · · 6 min read

Manus' parent company Butterfly Effect said on 8 October 2026 that it raised more than $500 million, according to TechCrunch. A bigger bank balance does not change what you can buy today, so this guide compares four agents you can sign up for or install now: Claude, Perplexity Max, Hermes Agent and Genspark. Prices were last checked on 15 October 2026.

Why are people looking for Manus alternatives after the raise?

The round makes Manus look stable, but it does not answer the questions buyers have. TechCrunch reports that Boyu Capital and IDG Capital led, that Tencent, HSG and ZhenFund took part, and that Manus did not disclose a valuation. The same article says Chinese authorities ordered the Meta deal unwound in April, and that Manus resumed independent operations in August and was required to delete some user data as part of the split.

Three practical reasons come up:

  • Credit billing. Manus charges in credits that tasks consume, so a monthly bill is hard to forecast.
  • Corporate uncertainty. The Meta unwind and a reported Hong Kong IPO consideration are not things a procurement team can price in.
  • Fit. Manus makes chat, vibe-coding, design, slides and video tools, per TechCrunch. If you only need one of those jobs, a specialist may be cheaper.

For the funding story itself, see our earlier piece on whether a $4 billion valuation is justified.

What does Manus cost as of 15 October 2026?

Manus lists three plans on its help center: Free at $0, Pro from $20 a month, and Team from $20 per seat a month. Annual billing takes 17% off.

Which Manus alternatives can you use this week?

Four options are usable today, each with a different trade-off. The table summarises them; details follow.

Is Claude a good Manus alternative?

Yes, if you want an agent bundled with a general assistant and a coding tool. Anthropic's pricing page lists Pro at $20 a month billed monthly ($17 a month on annual billing, $200 billed up front) and Max from $100 a month. Pro includes "Hand off and schedule tasks", Claude Code and Claude in Chrome.

Anthropic's page also carries a banner saying "Claude Cowork is now just Claude. Rolling out to Pro and Max, with more plans to follow." That is the company's own statement of rollout, so availability on your account may vary. Team seats are $20 a month on annual billing or $25 monthly for the standard seat.

Limitation: Anthropic says Claude Code is included in all paid plans and shares usage limits with the rest of the plan. Heavy coding can eat into the allowance you wanted for agent tasks. For a cost comparison against coding-specific tools, see Cursor vs Windsurf vs Claude Code.

Is Perplexity Max worth $200 a month as a Manus replacement?

Only if browser-based research agents are your main job. Perplexity's help center states "Perplexity Max costs $200/monthly or $2000/annually", and says Max is currently available only for consumers on a Free or Pro plan. Max subscribers get "the highest weekly limit on browser agent queries available across all subscription tiers", though no number is given.

Perplexity's plan comparison shows the browser agent (Comet Assistant) is not included on Free, has "monthly limits (average use)" on Pro and "monthly limits (advanced use)" on Max. Enterprise Pro lists 80 queries a month and Enterprise Max 800. Max also gets Brain, a memory feature in Perplexity Computer that is free during a research preview.

Limitation: The numbers for individual plans are not published, so you cannot work out cost per task. If the question is whether Perplexity is worth $20 at all, see our pricing comparison.

Is Hermes Agent a free alternative to Manus?

The software is free, the running costs are not. The Hermes Agent README calls it "the self-improving AI agent built by Nous Research", shows an MIT licence, and says you can run it on "a $5 VPS, a GPU cluster, or serverless infrastructure". You can point it at Nous Portal, OpenRouter, OpenAI or your own endpoint.

The documentation lists a messaging gateway covering 20+ platforms, dozens of built-in tools, MCP support and cron scheduling. The README lists seven terminal backends, including Docker, SSH, Modal, Daytona and Vercel Sandbox.

Limitation: There is no hosted Manus-style web app at a flat price. Nous Portal is described as a subscription with no price stated in its docs. You also own the security and uptime. For a deeper comparison, see Hermes Agent vs OpenClaw vs Claude Code and Manus alternatives: Cue, OpenSwarm and Hermes.

What about Genspark?

Genspark is the least documented option here. Wikipedia describes it as an AI search engine developed by MainFunc and released in June 2024, with a Genspark Autopilot Agent that runs detailed information searches from a text prompt.

Check Genspark's own pricing at genspark.ai before you buy.

How do the four compare on cost for a solo user?

Flat-fee tools make budgeting easier, but each hides a limit somewhere. The table uses published entry prices as of 15 October 2026.

ToolBilling modelEntry paid priceWhat you do not see up front
ManusCreditsFrom $20/month for 4,000 creditsCredits per task
ClaudeFlat plan with usage limits$20/month (monthly billing)Exact allowance, shared with Claude Code
Perplexity MaxFlat plan with usage limits$200/monthBrowser agent query counts
Hermes AgentBring your own hosting and models$0 softwareModel and server bills

If you want a rule of thumb: pick Claude for the cheapest paid entry with scheduled tasks, Perplexity Max for heavy browser research, and Hermes Agent when you would rather own the stack than rent it.

What's still unclear?

Several points remain open, and the weakest part of this comparison is on the Manus side.

  • Round size. The $500 million figure comes from the company's WeChat post as reported by TechCrunch. The valuation is undisclosed; the $4 billion number was reported as talks, not a closed figure.
  • Manus credit economics. The help article gives credits per plan but not how many credits a typical task burns, so a like-for-like cost comparison is not possible.
  • Manus pricing page. Manus says the live pricing page overrides its help article, so prices may differ from the table above.
  • Perplexity and Claude limits. Neither publishes exact agent allowances for individual plans.
  • Genspark. No plan prices are given here.
  • Not covered. ChatGPT's agent features are not included.

Which Manus alternative should you pick?

Choose by job rather than by brand. If you want scheduled tasks plus coding for about $20 a month, start with Claude Pro. If you do browser-heavy research and can justify $200 a month, look at Perplexity Max. If you can run a server and want no seat fees, try Hermes Agent. If you only need agent features that Manus already offers at $20 a month, there is no urgent reason to leave, and you can read our take on Manus Cue first.

Frequently asked questions

How much did Manus raise and who led the round?

According to TechCrunch, Manus' parent company Butterfly Effect said on 8 October 2026 that it raised more than $500 million. Boyu Capital and IDG Capital led the round, with existing shareholders Tencent, HSG and ZhenFund also taking part. Manus did not disclose a valuation. This was its first round since the Meta acquisition was unwound.

How much does Manus cost as of 15 October 2026?

Manus lists a Free plan at $0 with 300 daily credits, Pro from $20 a month with 4,000 monthly credits, a second Pro price point from $40 a month with 8,000 credits and a 7-day trial, and Team from $20 per seat a month. Annual billing takes 17% off. Manus says its pricing page overrides the help article.

Is there a free or open-source alternative to Manus?

Hermes Agent from Nous Research is MIT-licensed and self-hosted, so the software itself costs nothing. You still pay for hosting and for whichever model provider you connect, such as OpenRouter, OpenAI or your own endpoint. Manus also has a Free plan, but it limits you to Manus 2.0 Lite in Agent Mode and one concurrent task.

Which alternative gives the most predictable monthly bill?

Claude and Perplexity Max publish flat monthly prices: Claude Pro is $20 billed monthly and Max starts at $100, while Perplexity Max is $200. Both still apply usage limits. Manus bills in credits that tasks consume, so cost per task varies. Check each vendor's limits before committing to an annual plan.

Is Manus still safe to use after the Meta split?

TechCrunch reports Manus resumed independent operations in August and said it was required to delete some user data as part of the split. TechCrunch gives no detail on what was deleted. If your work involves sensitive data, read Manus' current privacy terms, and note the Team plan advertises a data training opt-out.
