Is Perplexity Still Worth $20 a Month When Google AI Mode and ChatGPT Search Are Free?

Perplexity vs Google AI Mode and ChatGPT search: Pro costs $20/month, but what does it add over free tiers? A price and feature check as of 13 Oct 2026.

By Madhur Jain · · 5 min read

Perplexity Pro costs $20 a month or $200 a year, according to Perplexity's own Help Center. Google AI Mode sits inside Search with no fee described, and ChatGPT search has been open to logged-out web users since February 2025, per TechCrunch. So the real question is what the $20 buys that two free tools do not. Prices and limits below are as of 13 October 2026.

What does Perplexity Pro actually include?

Pro gives you the strongest models on Perplexity plus higher usage caps. Perplexity says one subscription includes "all our latest and most powerful AI models, such as GPT-5.2, Claude Sonnet 4.6, and Gemini 3.1 Pro", along with extended Pro Search and Research, increased file and photo uploads, enhanced image generation and limited video generation.

The same page lists "10x as many citations per answer", plus the ability to create files and apps. Perplexity also warns that "access may be limited during weeks of especially heavy usage" for advanced model queries.

One thing Perplexity does not publish is a hard number. Its plan comparison describes Pro Searches as "weekly limits (average use)" and Research as "monthly limits (average use)". You are buying a bigger, vaguer allowance, not a fixed quota.

What do you get on Perplexity's free plan?

The free plan is more generous than most people assume for basic lookups. Per the plan comparison, Free has "practically unlimited basic searches", 3 Pro Searches a day, 1 Research query a month and limited file uploads. Perplexity picks the model for you.

Free has no access to advanced AI models, image generation or premium support, and no Comet Assistant (browser agent) queries. File and app creation is also unavailable on Free.

Is Google AI Mode free, and where is it available?

Google's pages describe no charge for AI Mode, which you reach through the Search bar, the Google app or google.com/ai. Google said on 7 October 2025 that AI Mode "will be available in over 200 countries and territories total". The support page lists supported countries by region, including the United States, India, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Japan, Germany and France. Check that list for your country, because Google updates it.

Google describes the technique as "query fan-out": AI Mode "divides your question into subtopics and searches for each one simultaneously". You can ask by text, voice, image or file, and ask follow-ups. Interactive visuals are available to signed-in users in English.

There is a paid layer. Gemini 3 Pro in AI Mode is available in English to users in a listed set of countries, or to Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra subscribers aged 18 and over, and Google says it "has daily usage limits". The Google AI plans page says the Pro plan adds expanded Gemini 3 Pro access in AI Mode and Deep Search, which is listed for Pro and Ultra users in the US. Plan prices vary by region, so check Google's page for yours.

Is ChatGPT search free?

Mostly yes, with a catch. According to TechCrunch, ChatGPT search launched in October 2024 for paying users, reached everyone in December 2024, and from 6 February 2025 worked without logging in on ChatGPT.com. The mobile app still required login at that time. That article names no regions, so availability outside the US depends on where ChatGPT itself is offered.

The catch is advertising. TechCrunch reported on 9 February 2026 that OpenAI began testing ads in the US for Free and Go users, with Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education tiers ad-free. Go costs $8 a month in the US. Plus remains $20 a month as of April 2026, per TechCrunch.

Where does Perplexity Pro beat the free options?

Pro wins on control and sourcing. Perplexity says Pro includes models from several labs, including GPT-5.2, Claude Sonnet 4.6 and Gemini 3.1 Pro. Perplexity also advertises 10x citations per answer, per the company, which matters if you check sources before you quote anything.

Pro also includes Comet Assistant, Perplexity's browser agent, with monthly limits. The free plan lists none. Paid consumer Pro plans include a weekly amount of Computer usage, plus a one-time bonus of 4,000 credits that expire in about 30 days. Perplexity says this is rolling out gradually, so some accounts may not see it yet.

Where do Google AI Mode and ChatGPT still win?

They win on cost and reach. For a one-off question, a free tier with live web results is enough. Google's support page also describes AI Mode accepting files, URLs and voice, with optional personalization from Gmail, Calendar and Photos for adults who enable it.

ChatGPT's draw is the chat product around the search. If you already use it for writing or code, search is one more feature in a tool you have open. If you want to avoid ads, the cheapest ad-free tier is Plus at $20, which is the same price as Perplexity Pro.

So is Perplexity Pro worth $20 a month?

It depends on how you use search. Pay for Pro if you run research queries daily, want model choice, or will use Comet Assistant and file creation. Stay free if your questions are occasional lookups, since two well-funded rivals give that away.

A practical test: use the free plan for two weeks and note how often you hit the 3-a-day Pro Search cap or the 1-a-month Research cap. If you hit them weekly, Pro is likely worth it. If not, the money is better spent elsewhere. The $200 annual plan works out to about $16.67 a month, a saving of roughly 17% against the monthly price (our arithmetic from Perplexity's listed prices).

What's still unclear?

  • Pro limits. Perplexity publishes no numbers for Pro Searches, Research or Comet Assistant, only "average use" wording. You cannot calculate cost per query.
  • Google AI plan prices. Google's own pages say plans may not be available in all regions or for all account types.
  • ChatGPT regions and limits. TechCrunch's reporting names no regions and no free-tier caps.
  • Quality. This comparison covers price and features as published by the vendors. It makes no claim about which tool answers more accurately.
  • Pace of change. Plan names and models change often. Last checked: 13 October 2026.
