Notion Alternatives for Teams Who Hate Subscriptions: AppFlowy, AFFiNE, Outline and Anytype
Notion alternatives open source compared: AppFlowy, AFFiNE, Outline and Anytype on licence, self-hosting, AI and cost, against Notion's $10 and $20 plans.
Notion lists its paid plans at $10 (Plus) and $20 (Business) per member per month as of 13 October 2026. Four self-hostable rivals avoid that per-seat bill, but none is a clean "open source Notion". The licences differ, and the licence is the first thing to check.
The short version: Outline is the best fit for a team wiki, AFFiNE for Notion-style docs plus whiteboards, Anytype for offline-first privacy, and AppFlowy for teams happy with a free single-seat start. All four give up some of what Notion does. Last checked: 13 October 2026.
Which Notion alternative has which licence?
Only AppFlowy's main app repository is a standard open source licence. The other three use dual or source-available terms, so "open source" needs a qualifier for each.
| Tool | Licence | What the licence allows | Stars on GitHub (13 Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| AppFlowy | AGPL-3.0 (app); commercial licence for current self-host server | Free to use the app; server is closed source | 77.3k |
| AFFiNE | MIT per README; pricing FAQ says backend is under an Enterprise licence | See the conflict below | 73.4k |
| Outline | Business Source License 1.1, converts to Apache 2.0 on 2030-10-12 | Any use except a "Document Service" | 40.9k |
| Anytype | Any Source Available License 1.0 | Non-commercial use, or commercial use in "Allowed Networks" | 8.9k |
Star counts are a popularity signal, not a quality score.
Can you self-host AppFlowy for free?
Yes, but only on a restricted tier. AppFlowy's archived AppFlowy-Cloud repository says it was archived on 11 September 2026 and is "no longer used to build or distribute the latest AppFlowy self-hosted server". The current server is, in the project's words, "a closed-source fork of this open-source core combined with proprietary features", distributed under a Commercial License Agreement.
The self-hosted Free tier, per the same README, includes one user seat per instance, up to 3 guest editors, page publishing and unlimited workspaces. A team of ten will therefore need a paid self-hosted plan, whose pricing sits on a separate page. The company says AppFlowy Web and AppFlowy Flutter "remain entirely open source".
On features, AppFlowy is candid. Its README says: "We do not claim to outperform Notion in terms of functionality and design, at least for now." Apps exist for macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android, and the repository tagline mentions AI, though the README gives no feature detail for it.
Is AFFiNE MIT licensed and free to self-host?
It depends on which AFFiNE page you read. The README says the Community Edition "is free for self-host under the MIT license". The pricing page FAQ describes a dual-license model: the editor, desktop app and most code are MIT, but the backend server is under an Enterprise Edition licence. Without a commercial agreement you "may review the backend source code only", and modifying, compiling or redistributing it needs AFFiNE's authorisation.
For a team that only wants to run the stock Docker image, that may never matter. For a team that wants to fork the server, it matters a lot. Ask AFFiNE in writing.
As of 13 October 2026, the self-hosted free tier lists 100 GB storage, a 100 MB file limit, up to 10 members per workspace and 30-day history. Self-hosted Team is $10 per seat per month, billed annually, and adds multi-admin roles and priority support. AFFiNE AI is a separate add-on at $8.9 per month billed annually, with some features marked Beta.
AFFiNE calls itself local-first and lists "multi-view databases" among its blocks. Its README also says the plugin community and third-party blocks are "coming soon".
Is Outline the best self-hosted team wiki?
For a wiki, probably yes, but it is a wiki rather than a Notion clone. The Outline LICENSE (Business Source License 1.1, licensor General Outline, Inc.) lets you use the software for anything except a "Document Service": a commercial offering that lets third parties, other than your employees and contractors, create teams and documents. Internal use is fine. On 12 October 2030 the licence converts to Apache 2.0. The licence itself states it is "not an Open Source license".
Running it takes some work. The hosting requirements list PostgreSQL v14+, Redis v4+, at least 512 MB of memory (1 GB or more recommended), a Unix OS, a dedicated domain and "a compatible Authentication Provider". The docs warn that Outline "requires dev-ops experience to successfully install and run in a production environment".
Costs, as listed on Outline's pricing page on 13 October 2026:
| Option | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud, 1 to 10 members | $10 per month | AI answering included |
| Cloud, 11 to 100 members | $79 per month | AI answering included |
| On-prem Community Edition | $0 | Limited features, no support, no AI answering |
| On-prem Business | $4 per user per month, billed annually | 10 user minimum |
| On-prem Enterprise | $5 per user per month, billed annually | 100 user minimum |
The Community Edition also lacks guest users, SAML 2.0, the Confluence importer and the security audit log. If you need those, you are paying anyway, though far less than Notion's per-seat price.
Is Anytype a real offline Notion alternative?
Anytype is the strongest on offline use. Its README describes a "local-first, peer-to-peer and end-to-end-encrypted knowledge OS" with "offline-first, local storage with optional peer-to-peer sync". It supports databases, kanban, calendar views and custom Types.
Self-hosting works differently from the others. Per the self-host guide, the team maintains a docker-compose setup, you load a config file on the desktop app, and "all your devices should be manually switched to the same self-hosted network." That is manual work per device.
Two limits matter for teams. First, the licence allows commercial use only in networks authorised by the Any Association, so a company running its own sync network should confirm that it qualifies. Second, the publishing docs say web publishing "is still in development", with no multi-page sites, custom themes or custom domains yet (custom domains are on the roadmap).
What does Notion charge, and what do you get for it?
As of 13 October 2026, Notion's pricing page shows Free at $0, Plus at $10 and Business at $20 per member per month, with Enterprise on custom pricing. The page offers a "Save up to 20%" yearly discount. Free and Plus include only a trial of Notion AI; Business lists Notion Agent and AI Meeting Notes as included.
Page history is 7 days on Free, 30 days on Plus and 90 days on Business. Free allows 5 MB uploads and 10 external guests. Notion lists SAML SSO and private teamspaces under Business, and audit logs under Enterprise.
For ten members on Business, that is $200 per month at the listed price. Outline's Business on-prem tier lists $4 per user per month with a 10 user minimum, and AFFiNE's self-hosted free tier covers ten members. You still pay for a server and for the time of whoever runs it.
What do you give up compared with Notion?
Each tool trades away something different. This table uses each vendor's own statements as of 13 October 2026.
| Tool | Main trade-off | Source |
|---|---|---|
| AppFlowy | Self-hosted free tier is one seat; says it does not claim to outperform Notion | Cloud README, README |
| AFFiNE | Backend licence unclear between pages; plugins "coming soon"; free tier capped at 10 members | README, pricing |
| Outline | Needs Postgres, Redis and an auth provider; Community Edition has no AI or SAML | Requirements, pricing |
| Anytype | Source-available licence; web publishing unfinished; manual per-device network setup | Licence, publish docs |
Notion's own advantages are breadth and polish: one product covering docs, databases, AI and permissions tiers. None of the four matches that on every axis, and all four ask you to own more of the operations.
Which one should your team pick?
Match the tool to the job, not to the logo.
- A team wiki and knowledge base: Outline. Pay for Business on-prem if you need SAML or guests.
- Docs, databases and whiteboards in one place, small team: AFFiNE, after you settle the backend licence question.
- Private notes that work offline, individuals or small groups: Anytype, after checking the commercial-use terms.
- A familiar Notion-like app with a path to paid self-hosting: AppFlowy, if one free seat is enough to evaluate it.
What's still unclear?
Several points are open as of 13 October 2026.
- AFFiNE's licence: the README and pricing FAQ describe the licence differently.- AppFlowy's paid self-host pricing: it sits on a separate page not covered here, so the cost beyond the free single seat is unconfirmed.
- Anytype's prices: plan costs are not included here.
- Notion's billing basis: the pricing page shows one figure per plan next to a yearly-discount toggle. Confirm whether you will be billed monthly or yearly before comparing.
- Day-to-day quality: this comparison is based on vendor documentation and repositories. Sync reliability, import quality and performance at scale are not covered.
Frequently asked questions
Are AppFlowy, AFFiNE, Outline and Anytype really open source?
Not all of them, and not in every component. AppFlowy's main repository is AGPL-3.0, but its current self-host server is a closed-source commercial fork. AFFiNE's README says MIT, while its pricing FAQ says the backend is source-available. Outline uses the Business Source License 1.1. Anytype uses the Any Source Available License 1.0. Read each licence before you commit.
Which Notion alternative is cheapest to self-host for a small team?
As of 13 October 2026, Outline's on-premises Community Edition is listed at $0 with limited features and no support, and AFFiNE's self-hosted free tier allows up to 10 members per workspace. AppFlowy's self-hosted free tier is one user seat per instance. Anytype's plan prices are not covered here.
Can I use Outline commercially inside my company?
Yes for your own team. Outline's Business Source License 1.1 grant allows any use except a Document Service, defined as a commercial offering that lets third parties other than your employees and contractors create teams and documents. Reselling it as a hosted wiki is the restricted case. The licence converts to Apache 2.0 on 12 October 2030.
Which option works fully offline?
Anytype describes itself as local-first and offline-first, with optional peer-to-peer sync. AFFiNE describes itself as local-first in its README. Notion lists Recents and Favorites as auto-downloading for offline use in its desktop and mobile apps. Outline is a server-based wiki and needs a running instance.
Do these tools have AI like Notion AI?
AFFiNE sells an AI add-on at $8.9 per month billed annually as of 13 October 2026, with some features marked Beta. Outline's cloud plans include AI question answering, but its Community Edition does not. AppFlowy's repository advertises AI in its tagline.
