Instinct Put Its AI Agent in Group Chats, Even for Friends Without Accounts. Is That Brilliant or Creepy?

Instinct AI agent group chats opened to early access on 5 October 2026 and work for friends without accounts. What it does, what it risks, who should wait.

Instinct, the personal AI agent from Spear Street Technology, opened early access to group chats on 5 October 2026. TechCrunch reports the group agent works even when a user's friends have not joined Instinct. The launch comes a week after Instinct raised $1 billion at a $10 billion valuation, according to Reuters, and while early users are still raising account-access concerns.

Our verdict, based on public reporting only (we have not used the product): the design is clever, but it asks a lot of trust from people who never agreed to anything. Last checked: 12 October 2026.

What did Instinct launch for group chats?

Instinct, which has no mobile app and works over text and calls, now lets early access users add it to a group chat. Founder Noah Shinn announced it on X on 5 October 2026, saying early access users can add Instinct to group chats starting that day, per TechCrunch.

When a user adds Instinct, a group-specific agent joins and, in the company's words as relayed by TechCrunch, works for the whole group. The use cases TechCrunch lists are travel planning, event tickets, fantasy leagues, carpools and who is bringing what to Thanksgiving.

Can friends without Instinct accounts really join in?

Yes, according to TechCrunch: the group chats work even if a user's friends have not joined Instinct. Let's Data Science, citing Business Insider, says friends do not need Instinct to take part.

That is the product's main bet. A group assistant that only works when everyone signs up would stall at the first holdout. The cost is that non-users get an AI participant in their conversation without having chosen the product, and the launch coverage does not say what those participants are told or can opt out of.

How does Instinct protect people in the group?

Shinn describes a permission model, as summarised by TechCrunch and AI Weekly. These are the company's claims, paraphrased here:

ControlWhat Shinn says
ConnectingA personal agent asks permission before connecting with the group's agent
TrustUsers choose which groups to trust and can remove that trust at any time
SeparationThe group's Instinct is siloed from users' personal accounts, which it cannot access
Sharing and actionsThe personal agent always asks permission before sharing information or taking any action
New membersIf new members join, pending replies from a personal agent are held before they reach the group

The held-replies rule appears only in TechCrunch's report. No independent review of these controls has been published.

Can it book tickets and split costs?

Ticket buying is named in the launch coverage. Cost splitting is less certain. Let's Data Science says Business Insider reported that Instinct can attempt to buy tickets when they go on sale, split the cost and distribute tickets to group members. TechCrunch's launch article does not mention cost splitting.

The company's terms matter here. TechCrunch reported in August that the terms say Instinct can enter agreements, commitments or transactions on users' behalf, and that these would be binding. How that applies to a group purchase, and who is liable when a friend does not pay, is not covered in the launch coverage.

What are the problems with Instinct?

The concerns predate group chats. In August 2026, TechCrunch collected reactions from testers of the single-user product:

  • Claire Vo said she disconnected Instinct from Google at 11 AM and still received an email summary at 2 PM, and the bot confirmed the emails were stored in plain text for later searches.
  • Katie Jacobs Stanton, founder of Moxxie Ventures, said Instinct sent an email on her behalf without checking with her, and she disconnected her email.
  • Alex Cohen, co-founder of Hello Patient, tested how easily Instinct could be phished and deleted his account.
  • Screenshots of the terms showed a broad "perpetual and irrevocable" licence over user materials, including for AI training. TechCrunch later said the initial privacy policy "has since been updated."

In October, Runtime Wire reported that four early adopters told Business Insider they deleted or restricted Instinct or Meta's Muse over inbox permissions, login credentials and a carrier two-factor prompt. The same write-up says none of them confirms a breach. Let's Data Science adds that early users raised concerns about inaccurate explanations of the agent's actions.

Reuters reports the company has described "isolated sandboxes and short-lived local credentials" and a new "active detection system" for hallucinations. Those are company statements.

How does Instinct compare with Meta's group chat agents?

Meta is the closest comparison, and its position is different. Per TechCrunch, Meta AI can already be added to group chats on WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram and Facebook, while Meta's newer Muse agent does not yet offer group chat functionality.

The table has gaps because the coverage compares only group chat support, so this is not a fuller feature comparison.

How much does Instinct cost and who is it for?

No price is published as of 12 October 2026. eesel AI, which sells a competing helpdesk product, reports that Instinct costs $0 during the invite-only beta and that the terms allow fees for certain features and price changes at any time. Treat the free status as temporary.

Funding does not tell you how many people use it. TechCrunch notes that Instinct has not shared user numbers.

By user type:

  • Organisers of trips, tickets and carpools: the best fit on paper, if you can get into early access and your friends are comfortable with an agent in the chat.
  • Anyone with sensitive inboxes: wait. The account-access reports are the strongest argument against connecting more of your life.
  • Privacy-minded group members: you may be added without choosing to be, so ask the organiser what is connected.
  • Teams and businesses: the terms are consumer-oriented (eesel notes they cover personal use only), and nothing in the coverage addresses workplace use.

What's still unclear?

  • Cost splitting: only one secondary outlet attributes it to Business Insider. The launch coverage from TechCrunch does not mention it.
  • Non-user consent: the coverage does not say how friends without accounts are told an agent is present, or whether they can remove it.
  • Verification of the permission model: every control in the table above is Shinn's description. No third-party audit has been published.
  • Business Insider's original reporting: the user accounts here come from secondary coverage of it, so the names of the four users and any company response are not public in that coverage.
  • Scale: Instinct has not disclosed user numbers, so it is unknown how many people have group chats available.

The weakest point in the pro-Instinct argument is the order of events. Group chats widen the agent's reach before the single-user trust questions have been publicly resolved.

Frequently asked questions

Do my friends need an Instinct account for group chats?

No. TechCrunch reports that the group chats with the agent work even if a user's friends have not joined Instinct. According to Instinct founder Noah Shinn, a new Instinct instance joins and works for the whole group. Only the person adding the agent needs early access, which rolled out on 5 October 2026.

How do I get Instinct group chats?

Group chats are limited to early access users as of 12 October 2026, with a wider rollout described as coming soon. TechCrunch reports that users can ask their Instinct agent to put them on the list to try it. Instinct itself has been an invite-only beta since August 2026.

Can the group agent see my personal accounts?

According to Shinn, no. He says the group's Instinct is siloed from users' personal accounts, and that each personal agent asks permission before connecting to the group agent or sharing information. These are the company's claims, and no independent audit of the design has been published.

How much does Instinct cost?

No price is published as of 12 October 2026. eesel AI reports the beta is free, and Instinct's terms say users may be required to pay fees for certain features, with pricing subject to change. Treat any future cost as unknown.

How much has Instinct raised?

Reuters reported on 28 September 2026 that Instinct raised $1 billion at a $10 billion valuation, with Sequoia Capital, Benchmark Capital and Coatue among the investors. TechCrunch reports the company confirmed it as a Series C. The company has not shared user numbers.

Is Instinct the only AI agent that works in group chats?

No. TechCrunch notes that Meta AI can already be added to group chats on WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram and Facebook. Meta's newer Muse agent did not offer group chat functionality as of the TechCrunch report on 5 October 2026.
